Personalities in the Media

Taking a detailed look at the influence media personalities have on our values and beliefs serves to further reinforce the case for media studies. But first, reflect on your own viewing choices and those around you in the following assignment.

Answer these questions:

1.

a. Who are your favourite male and female personalities? Consider actors, singers, models, talk show hosts, etc. Describe two personalities, including why you admire them or find them interesting. (6 marks)

b. Ask five other people about their favourite personality and why they like that individual. Record your findings. (5 marks)

c. In a paragraph, draw some conclusions about your findings. What qualities in the male personalities appeal to viewers? What qualities in the female personalities appeal to viewers? Are there any similarities? (4 marks)

2. A picture containing text, clipart Description automatically generated

a. Brainstorm a list of TV shows and movies, and describe the characters portrayed. Use the chart provided below to collect your data. Be sure to include TV shows from various days of the week and different time periods, as well as a variety of both movies and TV genres if possible. Try to find at least 8 characters for your research. (10 marks)

b. In a well-constructed paragraph, draw some conclusions: what does the information you have charted suggest about the representation of women and men and different ages? Rather than repeat your findings, reflect on the way gender influences specific roles. (5 marks)
